Got Questions?

HardiePlank® FAQ

Everything you need to know about HardiePlank® Lap Siding for your Florida home.

HardiePlank® Lap Siding is installed horizontally, overlapping each course from bottom to top. Boards are face-nailed or blind-nailed through the substrate into wall studs. James Hardie requires installation over a proper weather-resistive barrier (WRB) and recommends a minimum 6" clearance from grade. All cuts must be back-primed before installation to maintain warranty validity.

Yes. James Hardie requires a code-compliant weather-resistive barrier (WRB) — such as housewrap or building paper — installed behind all HardiePlank® products. This is a mandatory installation requirement and is critical to maintaining the 30-year limited warranty.

In some cases, HardiePlank® can be installed over existing siding if the substrate is structurally sound and flat. However, James Hardie and Tilaka Creative generally recommend removing old siding first to inspect the sheathing, address any moisture damage, and ensure a proper installation surface.

James Hardie specifies hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails for all HardiePlank® installations. Electro-galvanized nails are not acceptable. Nails must be driven flush — not countersunk — to avoid cracking the board.

Most residential HardiePlank® installations in Southwest Florida take between 3 and 10 days depending on the size of the home, complexity of the design, number of stories, and whether old siding removal is required.
